Coventry company has turned its waste and materials handling fleet completely JCB yellow with its latest order of four new machines.

Wastemasters Hire’s latest purchase includes a 437 wheeled loading shovel, a 457 Wheeled loader, a 560-80WM Loadall and a JS20MH wheeled material handler. The machines are built at JCB’s factories in Uttoxeter, Rocester and Cheadle, Staffordshire.

They have been bought to meet the growing demand for short-term hire of machines in the waste and recycling sector. Wastemasters Hire’s parent company, Tom White Waste (TWW), already has a fleet of fleet of JCB
machines. Established in the waste sector for 40 years, TWW has used several rival brands over those four decades – but with the latest purchase it will now be 100% JCB.

Paul Labram, Operations Manager at TWW and Director at Wastemasters Hire, said: “I’ve worked in the waste business for 15 years in various positions, including mechanic and machine driver. The loading shovels
produced by JCB today are the best that we have ever bought. In our opinion, they are perfect for the job; everything is pretty much as you would want from a loading shovel, materials handler or telehandler.

“They are all popular machines for the sector, so we ordered the same for our hire business. All the recent orders, bar the 457, which is suited to larger operations, we run on our own waste handling sites.”

The waste and recycling sector is a relatively young industry and has only recently benefitted from access to specialist handling machines, specifically designed to meet challenging environments. Short-term hire
for these machines scarce and this can be significantly limiting for busy operations. This was certainly the case for Wastemaster’s parent. On its own sites, which recycle mixed general and commercial wastes, shovels load
up to 30 lorries a day, as well as shredders and bins. The materials handlers work feeding recycling plants for the processing of material all day.

Paul Labram added: “You can get a standard construction machine easily enough, but it wouldn’t have the right arms, buckets, tyres, etc that are required to work on waste handling and recycling sites. We couldn’t find
anybody offering a recycling sector specific range for hire. So we thought: why don’t we get into the hire business ourselves?”

Wastemasters Hire now provides a fast, flexible plant hire business to meet the need for loading shovels and material handling machinery from waste and recycling industry clients across the country. Since it started
in January this year, Wastemasters Hire has been inundated with a high demand for the hire machines, which has seen them go directly from job to job.

One of the UK’s leading builder’s merchants is investing heavily in its
tool hire business with an order for 500 JCB machines worth more than £8 million.

Jewson is buying a fleet of JCB’s new flagship 15C-1mini excavators and JCB 8008 micro excavators, along with the new IT-HT site dumpers, VMT160-80 compactors and HTD5 Dumpsters.

The company is one of the first to invest in the innovative 15C-1 mini
excavator and IT-HT site dumpers. The 15C-1 offers class leading features such as 500 hour greasing intervals, all steel bodywork, all flat glass and ten tie down points for easy transportation. The 1T-HT is part of a full line up of JCB site dumpers manufactured at JCB World Headquarters in Rocester, Staffordshire

Jewson Managing Director Thierry Dufour and Director of Tool Hire Richard Pedersen visited JCB’s Staffordshire-based World Headquarters to see the new fleet roll off the production lines.

Mr Pedersen said: “This is a significant investment which makes our fleet of micro and mini excavators and dumpers one of the most modern in the industry. We are committed to offering our customers the most powerful and up-to-date machines around and this investment delivers on this promise.

“We selected JCB machines after extensive research into a number of suppliers. We have operated JCB mini and micro excavators, dumpers and compactors for many years and they have proved to be an invaluable part of
our fleet.”

JCB’s UK and Ireland Sales Director Steve Smith said: “We are delighted to win this repeat business from Jewson’s Tool Hire division. JCB has supplied machines to the company for many years and it’s testament to the
quality of our range of mini and micro excavators and compaction equipment that we’ve secured this valuable business again.

“Securing important business like this is not only about producing world-class products but also about offering world-class service back-up supported by the most extensive dealer network in the UK.”

With over 600 branches across the country, Jewson is the UK’s leading supplier of sustainable timber and building materials. It has been supporting the trade for more than 180 years and offers an extensive range

News that 40,000 construction firms are operating on the brink of collapse is a wake up call for contractors who urgently need to reduce their risk of exposure and increase their visibility to potential clients in a rapidly changing and disrupted supply chain.

The recent ‘Red Flag Alert’ research report for Q2 2017 from insolvency specialist Begbies Traynor1 shows that 40,495 construction companies are operating in a state of ‘significant’ financial distress at the end of June. This news, coupled with significant supply chain disruption and financial uncertainty means contractors are potentially facing a perfect storm.

Contractors face a tough task. The terrible tragedy at Grenfell Tower highlighted just how difficult, and critical it is for construction companies and their clients to have oversight of their increasingly long and disparate supply chains.2 For those 40,000 construction companies highlighted in the report, action needs to be taken.

“Now is the time for those contractors operating on the edge to act before it is too late,” explains David Stapleton, CEO and Founder of TenderSpace the online collaboration platform for the construction industry. “For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular, one small hiccup in their supply chain could be extremely costly. Increased diligence and ensuring your business is not dependent on just one large client or supplier must be one of your top priorities. Checking on a client’s ability to pay their bills and ensuring payment terms are met must also be in the plan.”

TenderSpace and its comprehensive suite of due diligence tools allows clients to keep track of potential issues and receive alerts when there is a significant change in the financial standing of an organisation. The Project Hub allows for visibility of projects and potential delays and variances, allowing those responsible to be alert to possible adverse issues before they become a major problem. Up to date information not only provides an audit trail for all involved and it allows people to make proactive rather than reactive decisions.

“Contactors also need to be searching for new opportunities and technology will help them achieve this,” continues David. “TenderSpace’s collaborative platform has never been so relevant and it offers everybody in the construction supply chain the chance to grow, manage and protect their businesses and their projects.”
